Cultural diary

All the participants have their own personal diary in OPTIMA where they update the cultural diary.
The culture diary is your learning diary. It is free form.
On the diary you document your learning process and given tasks.
The instructions for writing the diary:

  • Summarise given facts in the workshop or explain the event you participated. (What happened, what was the theme, with who, etc.)
  • Discuss the dealt matters and make remarks about the following topics:
    • Expectations (What did you expect from the lesson/event? How did it meet your expectations?)
    • Cultural Awareness (Did you learn about other cultures or intercultural matters in general? Did you learn something about your own culture?)
    • Interaction (Who did you meet? How did you interact with people from other cultures and people from your own country? Very you active?)
  • Reflect the themes and discussions in the workshop/event on our own experiences and every-day-life.
  • Compare the themes/matters discussed to own culture.
  • Give feedback – to organizers and to yourself. (Give a grade (1-5) to the event and to yourself. Write down why you liked/disliked the event and what would you have done differently?)
  • The minimum length for one cultural diary entry is 1 A4 page, typed with Times new roman 12 or Arial 10. One entry/event (event= workshop or lecture or other event). This means that in the end of the course, you will have at least 8 page long diary.
  • Write the diary first in word processor and then copy and paste it your diary entry.
  • DEADLINE for the diary entry from the event is one week. (If the event was on the 16th, the diary entry must be in Optima on the 23rd.) If you miss the deadline the event participation is ignored (no markings). So follow the deadlines.
  • If you are asked to make improvements to your diary entry, please do the improvements to a new entry sheet!

These given guidelines are the minimum requirement you need to fulfill per workshop/event in order to pass the course. If you experience something thought-provoking outside the classroom you are more the welcome to share it in your diary. You will also find out the writing process is easier and the discussions more diverse when the writing is more regular.

We hope that you write the diary also for yourself so that you can recognize your own strengths and weaknesses concerning cultural issues.

For reflecting your experiences you can use multiple methods besides writing, attaching video clips, pictures, photos … what ever reflects your thoughts and experiences.

Remember also that you have the diary as your memory lane from one stage of your life, so make it for yourself - just remember the guidelines for the course! :)
